Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori road section represents the part of international Tbilisi-Bakurtsikhe-Lagodekhi (Azerbaijan Border) road/highway which is the main highway connecting Tbilisi and Kakheti Region and the transit corridor connecting to Azerbaijan north-west region.

The existing Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori Road represents a two-lane road with the width of approximately 6.5-9.0 meters. It passes through the densely populated villages like Bakurtsikhe, Kardenakhi, Anaga and Vakiri. Total of 24 villages. As a result of the increased traffic flow, the issue of the road traffic capacity of the subject road has arisen. The road cannot ensure the smooth traffic flow. There are many entrances to the private yards. Due to the considerable number of populated areas, pedestrians often walk on the carriageway, the transit and local traffic flow is mixed along the road, which creates risk for road safety. The private houses and buildings are located along the road, therefore, improvement of geometric parameters of the road is impossible and the road safety improvement measures cannot be carried out.

Map showing existing road and selected alignment for Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori 16 km bypass

The project road Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori is 16 km long and will detour from the densely populated villages and run through the arable agricultural land parcels that belong to the residents of six settlements of Gurjaani and Sighnaghi municipalities of Kakheti region: villages Bakurtsikhe and Kardanakhi of Gurjaani municipality and villages Vakiri, Anaga, Sakobo and city of Tsnori of Sighnaghi municipality.

The total width of the road corridor is 13m. The road consists of two-lane carriageway and the shoulders. The selected design elements for the cross section of the project road are as follows:

  • Number of lanes                     : 2
  • Lane width                              : 3.50 m
  • Carriageway width                  : 7.00 m
  • Width of paved shoulder         : 2.50 m
