Architectural Committee of Azerbaijan, Aghdam, Karabagh, Azerbaijan, December 20, 2021

On December 20, 2021, AIM TEXAS, through its Design Group, proposed a design on invitation of the Architectural Committee of Azerbaijan, for Developing an Iconic Administrative Complex for Aghdam City, Karabagh, Azerbaijan, within the reconstruction and redevelopment master plan for the city.

Within the form of the site, sits on a site of 4 hectares, and placed are 3 approximately 6000 sq meter buildings, with the central one rising up to 13 stories; the complex hosts a variety of spaces from public assembly to office space and floors, as well as public and institutional areas.

As the essence of the Urban Concept was taken as the integration of the Aghdam Master plan, the site is located centrally to the city plan. The central location upon which it sits would be surrounded by all sides with governmental, cultural, and administrative centers.

The central location allows for the positioning of the pedestrian pathways and multi-modal transportation system, conceived as a part of the master plan and to be integrated into the system of creating a series of pedestrian pathways and public spaces.

These public spaces and paths for alternative modes of transportation not only increase the prominence of the building placement, but also facilitate more walkability to the nearby context.

The diagonal skewed axis allows for separation of of public and private programming and divides the site.

The combination of the urban, formal, frame under which the project is designed provides a consistent language of monumentality, yet with lightweight use of construction and materiality. This gem-like structure is then accentuated by the amorphous, topographical side buildings, which rise to gradate the scale of the complex, and frame buildings with each other.

Similarly, the formal gesture of the peripheral buildings and their photovoltaic canopies encompassing the inner plaza on both sides, the particularly egregious heat-wise East and West sun are eliminated due a deep recess and shaded canopy. Thus, affording even more energy efficiency of use and aid in the tertiary systems.
